Tamira lost her 1st Round match at the 1.340.000 $ Tier I tournament in Berlin.
She only held her serve once in each set what was insufficient in the end.
Let us look forward to Rome and the French Open in Paris. |

So first up for Tamira is Ukrainian world number 47 (that’s currently one place below Tamira) Kateryna Bondarenko who for all her success in the doubles with her sister recently has had a fairly indifferent start to the season and is 5-8 for the season. However she did prevail in three sets in their only previous meeting ominously also on clay in Warsaw last year. If she manages to come through this tricky opener then in the next round the 7th seed Elena Dementieva awaits. |

Tamira Loses Both Singles As Austria Crash To Switzerland

After a promising start to the weekend where Tamira took a high quality opening set on the tie breaker (7-5) off Schnyder the wheels well and truly fell off . First Schnyder fought back cruising through to win the next two 6-2, 6-1 as Tamira seemed to run out of gas. However this meek surrender was nothing compared to what followed. Having been given the opportunity to close out the tie following two wins by Sybille Bammer Tamira produced arguable her worst performance as a professional losing to the unheralded Stefanie Voegele ranked a lowly 200th in the world 4-6 6-1 7-5. To rub salt into the wound Tamira could only watch on helplessly from the stand as Switzerland proceeded to romp through the doubles and take the tie.
Hopefully Mimi can come back stronger Berlin next week as she begins her clay court season and regain some form an confidence ahead of Rolland Garros. Time for new coach Richard Brooks to justify his promotion. |

Austria Sybille Bammer Tamira Paszek Yvonne Meusburger Melanie Klaffner Captain: Alfred Tesar
Switzerland Patty Schnyder Emmanuelle Gagliardi Stefanie Voegele Nicole Riner Captain: Rolf Buhler
Messestadion Dornbirn (Halle 6), Dornbirn, Austria Stadium Capacity: 2700 26 April - 27 April 2008 Day 1: Saturday 26 April: 14:00 hours (12:00 hours GMT) Day 2: Sunday 27 April: 11.30 hours (09:30 hours GMT) Surface: Hard (Opticourt) - Indoors Ball Type: Head ATP Hard Court
Home advantage and the return of Tamira and Sybille should make Austria clear favourites for the tie. The only major hurdle standing in the way is Patty Schynder who provided she’s in the right frame of mind is always a dangerous opponent
(Though a golden opportunity for Mimi to get some revenge against her for the Bagel at Doha ) |
